The Horror of Christianity Essay -- essays research papers
"A Pagan Joke" A Pagan kicked the bucket and, causing her a deep sense of shock, wound up at the Pearly Gates confronting St. Subside. He approached her and stated, "Hello, and welcome." She gazed at St. Dwindle in complete disarray. "Wait a minute," she said. "I should wind up in the Summerlands." He grinned. "Ah, you should be one of our Pagan sisters. Tail me, please." Peter motioned for her to tail him down a little way, which experienced the doors and down a piece to one side. They strolled for a brief timeframe, at that point he ventured back and signaled her forward. Looking past his hand, she saw the verdant fields and woods of her ideal Summerlands. She saw individuals devouring, moving, and making joyful, precisely as she anticipated. While shaking her head in wonder, the Pagan happened to look over to the other side and saw a little gathering of individuals a short path away from the edge of the Summerlands. The indi viduals in the gathering were viewing the revelers, however not going along with them. Rather, they were shouting and sobbing desolately. The Pagan took a gander at St. Subside. "Who are those people?" St. Diminish answered, "Them? They're fundamentalists. They're somewhat astonished to see all of you there, so they remain there and continue like that all day." ââ¬Å"Why? Don't they have better things to do?" Peter inclined conspiratorially toward her. "They don't generally have a decision. They're entirely Hell. God doesn't care for being determined what He thinks." I start this paper with this joke to demonstrate a point. At the point when perused, agnostics, athiests, and those that lie outside the standard of Christianity will appreciate it, while Christian Fundamentalists and Conservatives will think it is in poor taste. Some may venture to such an extreme as to state ââ¬Å"My goodness, he is going to step on a ton of toes with that!â⬠The inquiry remains, however, WHOSE toes, and for what reason does it make a difference? The appropriate response can be found on the off chance that we analyze the brain science of Christianity. Christianity is one of the universes generally across the board and unavoidable religions, and has been around a decent drawn-out period of time. Any place it goes, it appears to spread and declare and invade. Evangelistic Christians convey teachers to satisfy one of the orders given to them in the Bible: ââ¬Å"Go ye forward and lecture the Gospel to all countries, absolving them for the sake of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.â⬠(Mt. 28:19) Christi... ...rt or be excluded, join or endure, love Christ or be of the villain, and acknowledge the Church or be annihilated. Not all Christians do this and not in the slightest degree times. In any case, a few Christians do submit demonstrations of demolition and this frightful viciousness is happening ordinary and has happened for the vast majority of the most recent two centuries some place on our reality. ââ¬Å"The night is dark, Without a moon. the air is thick and still. The vigilantes accumulate on The forlorn torchlit slope. Highlights contorted in the flashing light, The appearances are wound and peculiar. Quiet and harsh in the boiling night, The crowd moves like devils possesed. Calm in heart, quiet in their right, Certain their ways are ideal. The upright ascent With consuming eyes Of disdain and malevolence. Crazy people benefited from dread and lies To beat and consume and murder. They state there are outsiders who undermine us, In our settlers and heathens. They state there is weirdness excessively risky In our theaters and book shop racks, That the individuals who comprehend what's best for us Must ascent and spare us from ourselves. Fast to pass judgment, Fast to outrage, Slow to comprehend Numbness and preference What's more, dread Walk turn in hand....â⬠~Neil Peart, Witch Hunt

Women feminists fought for their right to not be property, rights to their inheritance, rights to an education and to a religion that was not patriarchal. Women wanted to be included in positions of decision-making. The beginning of the women movement in America can be marked by the Seneca Falls Convention in July 1848 (DeFonza). Abolition and Suffrage Aligns Although the alignment was difficult at first, black and white women formed bonds in the 20th century. They had a common goal of equality for all women. Women of color continued to participate and representatives such as Ida B. Wells and Mary Church Terrell also strove to show how the linkage of sexism and racism functioned as the main means of white male dominance (Krolokke, 4). The first wave of feminism grew out of the major reform movement, abolitionism (DuBois). The women working in abolition found that they were not allowed to fully and equally participate in the decision making processes of the movement. In 1869, the Suffrage movement split into two factions. One was the National Woman Suffrage Association, which was more radical and would not compromise on the issue of black mens suffrage; meaning that both men and women should be granted suffrage at the same time. It was seen that the best way to get the vote would be through a constitu tional amendment. The other was the American Woman

Hammurabiââ¬â¢s Code Essay Example For Students
Hammurabiââ¬â¢s Code Essay I am traveling to discourse the beginning of Hammurabiââ¬â¢s Code from our book. Beginnings of World Societies. During this clip. there were a batch of different societal categories. and the rich were decidedly favored more than the hapless. The Code contemplates the whole population as falling into three categories. the amelu. the muskinu and the ardu. The amelu was a patrician. the adult male of household. whose birth. matrimony and decease were registered. of hereditary estates and full civil rights. In the book. Beginnings of World Societies. Hammurabiââ¬â¢s codification was non the first known jurisprudence codification. but it is the earliest one to last mostly integral. The codification trades with the household. commercial activities. and agricultural life. The Torahs stated in the book dealt with medical patterns. explicating the phrase an ââ¬Å"eye for an oculus. tooth for a tooth. â⬠the most common jurisprudence. significance that a individual who has injured another individual receives the same hurt in compensation. The illustration used for that is Law 196. ââ¬Å"If a adult male put out the oculus of another adult male. his oculus shall be put out. Hammurabiââ¬â¢s Code was really to the point. significance that there was most probably a jurisprudence for everything possible in a error. For illustration. Law 218 provinces. ââ¬Å"If a doctor performed a major operation on a freewoman with a bronze lancet and has caused the freemanââ¬â¢s decease. or he opened up the eye-socket of a freewoman and has destroyed the freemanââ¬â¢s oculus. they shall cut off his manus. â⬠I understand that the doctor did mess up a important surgery. but I do believe itââ¬â¢s a small hideous to cut off his whole manus! Possibly it would be better if he merely got punished for the error. I do believe itââ¬â¢s unjust that if he messed up a slaveââ¬â¢s surgery. he received boodles of Ag. Law 217 provinces. ââ¬Å"If it was a freemanââ¬â¢s slave. the proprietor of the slave shall give two boodles of Ag to the doctor. â⬠How messed up is that? Slaves were killed for about every minor discourtesy. Hammurabiââ¬â¢s Code consisted of around 282 Laws. Hammurabiââ¬â¢s Code was established around 1780 B. C. Hammurabi was the swayer who chiefly established the illustriousness of Babylon. the worldââ¬â¢s foremost city. Hammurabi had many achievements other than the jurisprudence codification. He unified Mesopotamia under Babylonian regulation. and established the domination of the Babylonian God Marduk. Hammurabiââ¬â¢s Code was arranged in orderly groups. so that all work forces might read and cognize what was required of them. The codification was carved upon a black rock memorial. eight pess high. and clearly intended to be reared in public position. This noted rock was found in the twelvemonth 1901. in a metropolis of the Iranian mountains. It begins and ends with references to the Gods. The Code clearly stated the regulations of matrimony. holding kids. and what they were able to make with their kids. For illustration. if a married twosome got a divorce. and the adult female was a ââ¬Å"bad married woman. â⬠the Code allowed him to direct her off while he got to maintain the kids and her dowery. or he could degrade her to the place of a slave in his ain house. Women seemed to be treated ill during this clip. and work forces seemed to ever be in charge. For illustration. Law 110 provinces. ââ¬Å"If a ââ¬Å"sister of a godâ⬠open a tap house. or come in a tap house to imbibe. so shall this adult female be burned to decease. Honestly. this one sort of shocked me a spot. Women go to taverns all the clip. and if it was this twenty-four hours and age. it would be considered a immense offense if a adult female got put to decease from traveling to a tap house. The most common punishment was a all right. but many resulted in decease. For case. Law 2 provinces. ââ¬Å"If any one bring an accusal against a adult male. and the accused spell to the river and spring into the river. if he sink in the river his accuser shall take ownership of his house. .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b , .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b .postImageUrl , .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b , .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b:hover , .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b:visited , .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b:active { border:0!important; } .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b:active , .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u5890bfe59f541c79be957e57b9d6ad1b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Gay marriage EssayBut if the river prove that the accused is non guilty. and he escape unhurt. so he who had brought the accusal shall be put to decease. while he who leaped into the river shall take ownership of the house that had belonged to his accuser. â⬠This jurisprudence really makes a batch of sense. If a adult male is wrongly accused. so the accuser should acquire punished. Why should the accuser go without acquiring a punishment. but he should merely acquire a all right. and non be put to decease. It does look a small Wyrd that their allowing the river determine their destiny. It seemed like they had a batch of beliefs in nature. and allow nature make up one s mind their destiny. I have read these Code Torahs over and over multiple times and a few of them has made me chortle a spot. I merely think to myself. what were these people believing? ! Law 25 says. ââ¬Å"If fire interruption out in a house. and some one who comes to set it out cast his oculus upon the belongings of the proprietor of the house. and take the belongings of the maestro of the house. he shall be thrown into that self-same fire. â⬠This jurisprudence confused me a spot. does it intend that if the individual coming to set out the fire looks at the belongings of where the fire is at. he must be thrown into the fire? If so. that decidedly doesnââ¬â¢t make any sense. Law 132 provinces. ââ¬Å"If the ââ¬Å"finger is pointedâ⬠at a manââ¬â¢s married woman about another adult male. but she is non caught kiping with the other adult male. she shall leap into the river for her hubby. â⬠I understand that rip offing a a really incorrect thing to make. but if she was non caught why should she hold to leap into the river? What is she traveling to larn about making such a thing. Jumping in the river likely was a large punishment back so. In decision. after I looked and went over Hammurabiââ¬â¢s Code. I have learned rather a spot about how life was lived back so. Merely believing that all of our ascendants had to travel through that. and how many lives were lost for making certain offenses that we would see minor discourtesies today. If our ascendants lived in the universe we lived in today. they would likely believe itââ¬â¢s so easy. when we think itââ¬â¢s ace hard. The Torahs were taken really earnestly and barely went unobserved. We think these Torahs are really hideous and uncalled for. when in world. they likely werenââ¬â¢t that large of a trade back so. I chose this beginning because it seemed truly interesting to acquire to cognize about how the jurisprudence was made back in 1800 B. C. E. It is of import to understand this period of history to see how Torahs were even made or thought of. Every jurisprudence that we have is most likely a revised version of one of Hammurabiââ¬â¢s Code Laws. Hammurabiââ¬â¢s Code informed me that early World History is really different than what it is today. This is my first clip of all time hearing about Hammurabiââ¬â¢s Code. and even larning about 1800 B. C. E. I have truly enjoyed larning more about this subject.

THE GREAT IMPOSTERS Finding good day care can certainly pose a problem these days, unless, of course, you're an African widow bird. When it comes time for a female widow bird to lay her eggs, she simply locates the nest of a nearby Estrildid finch and surreptitiously drops the eggs inside. That's the last the widow bird ever sees of her offspring. But not to worry, because the Estrildid finch will take devoted care of the abandoned birds as if they were her own. And who's to tell the difference? Though adult widow birds and Estrildid finches don't look at all alike, their eggs do. Not only that, baby widow birds are dead ringers for Estrildid finch chicks, both having the same colouration and markings. They even act and sound the same, thus ensuring that the widow bird nestlings can grow up among their alien nestmates with no risk of being rejected by their foster parents. MASTERS OF DISGUISE Things aren't always as they seem, and nowhere is this more true than in nature, where dozens of animals (and plants) spend their time masquerading as others. So clever are their disguises that you've probably never known you were being fooled by spiders impersonating ants, squirrels that look like shrews, worms copying sea anemones, and roaches imitating ladybugs. There are even animals that look like themselves, which can also be a form of impersonation. The phenomenon of mimicry, as it's called by biologists, was first noted in the mid-1800s by an English naturalist, Henry W. Bates. Watching butterflies in the forests of Brazil, Bates discovered that many members of the Peridae butterfly family did not look anything like their closest relatives. Instead they bore a striking resemblance to members of the Heliconiidae butterfly family. Upon closer inspection, Bates found that there was a major advantage in mimicking the Heliconiids. Fragile, slow-moving and brightly coloured, the Heliconiids are ideal targets for insectivorous birds. Yet, birds never touch them because they taste so bad. Imagine that you're a delicious morsel of butterfly. Wouldn't it be smart to mimic the appearance of an unpalatable Heliconiid so that no bird would bother you either? That's what Bates concluded was happening in the Brazilian jungle among the Pieridae. Today, the imitation of an inedible species by an edible one is called Batesian mimicry. Since Bates' time, scientists have unmasked hundreds of cases of mimicry in nature. It hasn't always been an easy job, either, as when an animal mimics not one, but several other species. In one species of butterfly common in India and Sri Lanka, the female appears in no less than three versions. One type resembles the male while the others resemble two entirely different species of inedible butterflies. Butterflies don't "choose" to mimic other butterflies in the same way that you might pick out a costume for a masquerade ball. True, some animals, such as the chameleon, do possess the ability to change body colour and blend in the with their surroundings. But most mimicry arises through evolutionary change. A mutant appears with characteristics similar to that of a better protected animal. This extra protection offers the mutant the opportunity to reproduce unharmed, and eventually flourish alongside the original. In the world of mimics, the ant is another frequently copied animal, though not so much by other ants as by other insects and even spiders. Stoop down to inspect an ant colony, and chances are you'll find a few interlopers that aren't really ants at all but copycat spiders (or wasps or flies). One way you might distinguish between host and guest is by counting legs: Ants have six legs while spiders have eight. Look carefully and you might see a few spiders running around on six legs while holding their other two out front like ant feelers. COPYCATS Mimicry can not only be a matter of looking alike, it can also involve acting the same. In the Philippine jungle there is a nasty little bug, the bombardier beetle. When threatened by a predator, it sticks its back end in the air, like a souped-up sports car, and lets out a blast of poisonous fluid. In the same jungle lives a cricket that is

Addiction of A Legend essays
Addiction of A Legend essays Being famous and living the glamour life isnt always what it seems to be. On camera actors look happy, but deep down inside they are starving to live and be a regular people. Actors cant be normal people because the public imposes its own preconceived notions of how entertainers should be. In the late 1930s, through present day, movie actors, particularly women, and popular singers, were forced to have the ideal look of the time period. Show business is a very competitive career to be involved in. If actors are not what the public demands of them, they can be replaced quickly. Due to the pressures and demands of the movie industry in the 1930s-1960s, many actresses, such as Judy Garland, were forced to be the stereotypical thin girl in order to keep doing what she loved, acting. The burden to be perfect that was put on Judy Garland, which slowly led her down a path of drugs, and gradually led to her downfall. Frances Gumm was born to a family of vaudeville performers in Grand Rapids, Minnesota on June 10,1922. She was brought into the world of acting at an early age. Her first ever performance was on December 26, 1924. She sang Jingle Bells during her parents Christmas show at their Grand Rapids Theater. (Teachout, 50) She joined the The Gumm Sisters Kiddie Act, at age three with her two older sisters. The three continued to appear at theaters and social functions around the Grand Rapids area until their move to Lancaster, California. When they moved, Judys father bought a local theater, and immediately enrolled his daughters in dancing and acting lessons at schools in Los Angeles. Their mother was their manager, and booked many events for the girls where they began to develop a fan population. The Gumm sisters appeared in a few small works such as, The Starlet Revue (in 1929), A Holiday in Storyland, The Wedding of Jack and Jill, and Bubbles. When the sisters traveled with their ...

Annotated bibliography - Essay Example The data was collected from a group of four students in CHIP and five students from ILAC through written reflections by the students as well as team debriefing, which was then analyzed by the authors using content analysis method. Through this method, initial coding categories were identified, which were then used to generate the main categories of the study: cultural competency, clinical reasoning, and international leadership. The findings were consistent with the hypothesis. It was discovered that the cultural immersion in international settings has significant effect on the main categories of the study, as does the experiential learning done in such settings. This, the study points out, is also consistent with previous studies done on this topic. The article points out the positive effect international programs have in student learning. The study is well documented and researched and goes to prove its hypothesis quite well. The focus group, however, was too small, and limited to two international settings only. This article seeks to document the need for cultural diversity in medical school programs. It also strives to look into what steps are being taken by Canadian universities and educators to cope with the ever changing health needs of the community that is now more diverse due to ever increasing immigration. The study gathered data about cultural diversity education through the websites of 14 English Canadian undergraduate medical schools. The data was gathered through manual and keyword search from these websites. This data was analyzed and reviewed via a set of criteria. An inter-coder reliability technique was used to ensure reliability. A tool was also developed to classify the various approaches used to include matters relating to cultural diversity during undergraduate medical education so that it could be used for future

The High Middle Ages Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4000 words
The High Middle Ages - Research Paper Example Since Latin was the language of the Catholic Church, which dominated Western and Central Europe, and since the Church was virtually the only source of education, Latin was a common language for Medieval writings, even in some parts of Europe that were never Romanized. However, in Eastern Europe, the influence of the Eastern Roman Empire and the Orthodox Church made Greek and Old Church Slavonic the dominant written languages. The common people continued to use their respective vernaculars. A few examples, such as the Old English Beowulf, the Middle High German Nibelungenlied, the Medieval Greek Digenis Acritas and the Old French Chanson de Roland, are well known to this day. Although the extant versions of these epics are generally considered the works of individual (but anonymous) poets, there is no doubt that they are based on their peoples' older oral traditions. Celtic traditions have survived in the lais of Marie de France, the Mabinogion, and the Arthurian cycles. A notable amount of medieval literature is anonymous. This is not only due to the lack of documents from a period, but also due to an interpretation of the author's role that differs considerably from the romantic interpretation of the term in use today. Medieval authors were often overawed by the classical writers and the Church Fathers and tended to retell and embellish stories they had heard or read rather than invent new stories. And even when they did, they often claimed to be handing down something from an actor instead.

George C. Wallace Essay -- essays research papers
George Wallace The 1960's were characterized as an era full of turmoil. During this era, one of the most controversial topics was the fight over civil rights. One of the key political figures against civil rights movement and pro-segregation was George Wallace. Wallace represented the racist southern view. Many Americans were segregationist, but Wallace was adamant about the topic. Many established political figures were assassinated, during the 1960's. Martin Luther King, JFK, and RFK were all positive visionaries caused controversy throughout that decade. George Wallace was against the modern government, pro-middle class, and against civil rights. Wallace and many other visionaries were cut down to early in life. Wallace was not killed by the assassin's bullet but his political career was changed. The attempt on Wallace's life left him a broken man in a wheelchair. People remembered the George Wallace who smoked his cigar and denounced the State Department as communist. Wallace was a feared polit ician who lived in a state full of beatings and problems. Racism was the norm and Wallace took full advantage of this ploy to gain political attention. George Corley Wallace was born on August 25, 1919. While attending Barber County High School, he was involved with boxing and football. George even won the state Golden Gloves bantamweight championship not once but twice. Wallace then attended the University of Alabama Law School; this was the same year his father died. Wallace was strapped for cash, so he worked his way through college by boxing professionally, waiting on tables, and driving a taxi. He received his degree in 1942 from the University. After receiving a medical discharge from the U.S. Air Force, he returned to Alabama. In 1946, Wallace got a job as an assistant to the attorney general for the state of Alabama. Wallace polled to become state representative of Barbour County. During his jaunt as a state representative, he had a number of highlights. They included bills that issued in the industrial era that attracted hundreds of new industries. He was also involved with the GI and Dependents Scholarships Act that provides widows and children access to trade schools and colleges. Wallace entered the governor's race in 1958. Patterson ran on the Ku Klux Klan ticket; Wallace refused it. The NAACP endorsed Wallace for governor. Wallace lost the g... ...o say, "I'm sorry." The leaders accepted his change in heart but they could never fully forgive him. Former Governor George C. Wallace of Alabama, who built his political career on segregation, died September 13, 1998 at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery. He was 79 and had been in declining health since being shot in his 1972 presidential campaign. Wallace, a Democrat who was a longtime champion of states' rights, dominated his own state for almost a generation. He also became the only Alabamian ever sworn in for four terms as governor, winning elections in 1962, 1970, 1974, and 1982. He retired at the end of his last term in January 1987. Maslow and Jung: Life and the Workplace Essay
We work, strive, succeed, and sometimes we fail. What drives us to succeed, or in some cases keeps us from success? Perhaps a better understanding of our motives, and the motives of our colleagues would help us make the personality changes we need to succeed. The way we interact with others in the workplace and our personal life may be improved. The Freudian theories opened our minds to many of our odd behaviors but did little to provide methods of self-examination. Very few of us have the time and the funds available for in-depth psychoanalysis. The theories of Carl Jung and Abraham Maslow are interesting and, in certain respects, opposing. With study, introspection, and a better awareness of others, aspects of the theories of Jung and Maslow can be used by most individuals to improve their working and personal relationships. Carl Jung was a younger colleague of Sigmund Freud but he made the exploration of ââ¬Å"inner spaceâ⬠his lifeââ¬â¢s work. Jung and Freud began to go their separate ways in 1909 even though Freud had once considered Jung his heir apparent, the ââ¬Å"crown prince of psychoanalysisâ⬠(Boeree, 2006 Pg 3 à ¶3). Jung had an extensive knowledge of mythology, religion, and philosophy. He was especially knowledgeable in the symbolism of complex mystical traditions: Gnosticism, Alchemy, Kabala, Hinduism, and Buddhism. He had a capacity for lucid dreaming and occasional visions (Boeree, 2006). Jung divided the psyche into three parts: ego, personal unconscious, and the collective unconscious. The ego and personal unconscious are very much like Freudââ¬â¢s understanding of the psyche; the collective unconscious was added to Freudââ¬â¢s theories and stands out from all others. This part of the psyche represents our experiences as a species, a knowledge with which we are born (Boeree, 2006). Jung spent a great deal of time in self-examination. Much of his theory is based on this introspection and a source of criticism from several of his colleagues. Jung carefully recorded his dreams, fantasies, and visions; he felt if we could recapture our mythologies, our ghosts, we could understand these ghosts and heal our mental illnesses (Boeree, 2006). Jungââ¬â¢s sense of personal examination and commonality of the unconscious may allow us all to heal and live better, more fulfilling lives. Abraham Maslowââ¬â¢s belief in Humanistic Psychology and his Hierarchy of Needs can be, and has been, applied in the workplace outside of psychology. A pyramid, with Physiological Needs at its base, represents the Hierarchy (Boeree, 2006). The Hierarchyââ¬â¢s five stages: physiological, safety, belonging, esteem, and Self-actualization explain many of the motivations within the workplace. One example is the rather obvious puzzle of why employees are only temporarily satisfied by a raise in salary. Inevitably, most employees are satisfied when first receiving the bump up in pay. However, just as inevitably, shortly thereafter the same employee expects another raise; he has become dissatisfied. Even when the raises in pay are forthcoming in intervals that are acceptable, the employee still seems to become dissatisfied. Maslow believed that we are driven to understand and accept ourselves as fully as possible, and are motivated to satisfy ever-increasing levels of motivation. Once the basic need of enough money to provide a basic standard of living is met, the employee is still driven to satisfy higher needs. These higher needs may include a sense of personal achievement (Heffner, 2002). Maslow felt that no one would ever reach the top of his hierarchy but should realistically try only to get as close as possible. Through our continued journey in life, meeting problems and issues, we can either grow or slip backward. We can choose to learn and continue climbing or give up. Most people choose to continue their climb. With some, this choice is not an actual conscious decision. The choice is more of a drive to succeed or a cycle of happiness and depression that we have trouble understanding. As a supervisor or manager, our ability to understand the constant cycle of satisfaction and dissatisfaction may mean the difference between a successful career and failure. If in a career or business the only answer to dissatisfaction is monetary, excessive cost to the company can be easily caused and still have unhappy employees and a high turnover rate. Conclusion Carl Jungââ¬â¢s introspection and self-examination have led us to the realization that childhood traumas are not the only sources of behavior and personality characteristics. Our continued learning from our experiences, our differentiation, gives us a life-long ability to make corrections. Abraham Maslowââ¬â¢s understanding of our motivation and constant striving for satisfaction has brought the person back into Psychology and given renewed attention to the truly human qualities that make up us all. Understanding the motivation and satisfaction needs of colleagues, our family members, and ourselves provides avenues of action that were previously only sources of frustration. Taking heed of both schools of psychological thought, the Neo-Freudian Carl Jung and the Humanistic Psychology of Abraham Maslow, may be our best path for understanding our own behavior and motives and those of our colleagues and family. Famous Flash Fiction
Over the past few decades, flash fiction, micro-fiction, and other super-short short stories have grown in popularity. Entire journals such as Nano Fiction and Flash Fiction Online are devoted to flash fiction and related forms of writing, while contests administrated by Gulf Coast, Salt Publishing, and The Kenyon Review cater to flash fiction authors. But flash fiction also has a long and respectable history. Even before the term ââ¬Å"flash fictionâ⬠came into common usage in the late 20th century, major writers in France, America, and Japan were experimenting with prose forms that put special emphasis on brevity and concision.à Charles Baudelaire (French, 1821-1869) In the 19th century, Baudelaire pioneered a new type of short-form writing called ââ¬Å"prose poetry.â⬠Prose poetry was Baudelaireââ¬â¢s method for capturing the nuances of psychology and experience in short bursts of description. As Baudelaire puts it in the introduction to his famous collection of prose poetry, Paris Spleen (1869): ââ¬Å"Who has not, in bouts of ambition, dreamt this miracle, a poetic prose, musical without rhythm or rhyme, supple and choppy enough to accommodate the lyrical movement of the soul, the undulations of reverie, the bump and lurch of consciousness?â⬠The prose poem became a favorite form of French experimental writers, such as Arthur Rimbaud and Francis Ponge. But Baudelaireââ¬â¢s emphasis on turns of thought and twists of observation also paved the way for the ââ¬Å"slice of lifeâ⬠flash fiction that can be found in many present-day magazines. Ernest Hemingway (American, 1899-1961) Hemingway is well-known for novels of heroism and adventure such as For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Seaââ¬âbut also for his radical experiments in super-short fiction. One of the most famous works attributed to Hemingway is a six-word short story: ââ¬Å"For sale: baby shoes, never worn.â⬠Hemingwayââ¬â¢s authorship of this miniature story has been called into question, but he did create several other works of extremely short fiction, such as the sketches that appear throughout his short story collection In Our Time. And Hemingway also offered a defense of radically concise fiction: ââ¬Å"If a writer of prose knows enough about what he is writing about he may omit things that he knows and the reader, if the writer is writing truly enough, will have a feeling of those things as strongly as though the writer had stated them.â⬠Yasunari Kawabata (Japanese, 1899-1972) As an author steeped in the economical yet expressive art and literature of his native Japan, Kawabata was interested in creating small texts that are great in expression and suggestion. Among Kawabataââ¬â¢s greatest accomplishments are the ââ¬Å"palm-of-the-handâ⬠stories, fictional episodes and incidents that last two or three pages at most. Topic-wise, the range of these miniature stories is remarkable, covering everything from intricate romances (ââ¬Å"Canariesâ⬠) to morbid fantasies (ââ¬Å"Love Suicidesâ⬠) to childhood visions of adventure and escape (ââ¬Å"Up in the Treeâ⬠). And Kawabata didnââ¬â¢t hesitate to apply the principles behind his ââ¬Å"palm-of-the-handâ⬠stories to his longer writings. Near the end of his life, he crafted a revised and much-shortened version of one of his celebrated novels, Snow Country. Donald Barthelme (American, 1931-1989) Barthelme is one of the American writers most responsible for the state of contemporary flash fiction. For Barthelme, fiction was a means of igniting debate and speculation: ââ¬Å"I believe that my every sentence trembles with morality in that each attempts to engage the problematic rather than to present a proposition to which all reasonable men must agree.â⬠Although these standards for indeterminate, thought-provoking short fiction have guided short fiction in the late 20th and early 21st century, Barthelmeââ¬â¢s exact style is difficult to imitate with success. In stories such as ââ¬Å"The Balloonâ⬠, Barthelme offered meditations on strange eventsââ¬âand little in the way of traditional plot, conflict, and resolution. Lydia Davis (American, 1947-present) A recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, Davis has won recognition both for her translations of classic French authors and for her many works of flash fiction. In stories such as ââ¬Å"A Man from Her Pastâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Enlightenedâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"Storyâ⬠, Davis portrays states of anxiety and disturbance. She shares this special interest in uneasy characters with some of the novelists she has translatedââ¬âsuch as Gustave Flaubert and Marcel Proust. Like Flaubert and Proust, Davis has been hailed for her breadth of vision and for her ability to pack a wealth of meaning into carefully-chosen observations. According to literary critic James Wood, ââ¬Å"one can read a large portion of Davisââ¬â¢s work, and a grand cumulative achievement comes into viewââ¬âa body of work probably unique in American writing, in its combination of lucidity, aphoristic brevity, formal originality, sly comedy, metaphysical bleakness, philosophical pressure, and human wisdom.ââ¬
